Internet access does not affect the amount of time that online households spend watching TV, according to Nielsen Media. Their study found that US households that chose to go online were light TV users before they gained Net access. Academics Consider Internet Addiction The controversial subject of Internet addiction was the subject of a recent study conducted at the University of Hertfordshire. The research was based on a survey of 445 UK users and the findings were presented to the British Psychological Society. There is ongoing debate as to whether it is possible to be addicted to the Net, and if so, how to accurately define it. For the purposes of this study addicts were defined as those who were heavy Internet users and positive about it.46% of respondents to the study described themselves as Internet addicts. The majority of those describing themselves as addicts were around 30 years old and women were as likely as men to consider themselves addicted to the Net. This is contrary to the typical perception of the Internet addict as a shy, inhibited, teenage male, according to the report.
